World Cup 2027 Venues Revealed: matches to be held in these 12 cities
The upcoming Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Excitement for this World Cup has already started building up. The ICC has now also revealed the specific stadiums where the Cricket World Cup 2027 matches will be played. The ICC (International Cricket Council) has officially announced the host cities and stadiums for the One Day World Cup 2027. Cricket’s most prestigious tournament is scheduled to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia this time. After 24 years, the African continent has once again been given the opportunity to host the One Day World Cup.
Prior to this, the 2003 World Cup was jointly organized by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. Now in 2027, Africa is once again ready to welcome the world’s biggest cricket event. On Thursday (July 30), during a grand ceremony organized in Johannesburg, the ICC announced the names of 12 venues for the World Cup. During this event, former South Africa captain Graeme Smith, former fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, former batsman Hashim Amla, current captain Temba Bavuma, star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, former Zimbabwe captain Hamilton Masakadza, and former Namibia player Rudolph Jansen van Vuuren were also present.
South Africa to Host the Most Matches:
The majority of the matches in the World Cup 2027 will be played across 8 stadiums in South Africa.
● Wanderers Stadium (Johannesburg)
● uperSport Park (Centurion)
● Newlands (Cape Town)
● Kingsmead (Durban)
● St George’s Park (Gqeberha)
● Mangaung Oval (Bloemfontein)
● Boland Park (Paarl) and
● Buffalo Park (East London) will host the World Cup matches.
Three venues have been selected in Zimbabwe. These include:
● Harare Sports Club (Harare)
● Queens Sports Club (Bulawayo) and
● Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium (Victoria Falls).
Meanwhile, the matches to be held in Namibia will be played at the Namibia Cricket Ground located in Windhoek.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said that the return of the World Cup to Africa is a very special moment for global cricket. He said, ‘The return of this prestigious tournament to Africa after 24 years is a historic moment for cricket. We are fully confident that South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will give the world a memorable World Cup with their hospitality, passion, and diverse culture.
Tournament Format Change:
The ICC has made a major change to the World Cup format this time. A total of 57 matches will be played, and the tournament will be organized in three stages. First, there will be a Super Series, in which three teams ranked 12th, 13th, and 14th in the ICC rankings will play a round-robin. Out of these, only one team will qualify for the main tournament. After this, 12 teams will be divided into two groups. There will be six teams in each group, and every team will compete against the remaining teams in its group. After the group stage, the top three teams from both groups and the seventh-ranked team will reach the Super-7 stage. Here, 21 matches will be played. The top four teams in the Super-7 points table will secure a ticket to the semifinals. The team finishing in first place will face the team in fourth place, while the teams in second and third place will go head-to-head in the second semifinal.
