Very few believed Kapil Dev’s team could even reach the knockout stage. Then came the unforgettable journey. Kapil Dev played one of the greatest ODI innings ever 175 against Zimbabwe to rescue India from 17/5 and keep their campaign alive.
In the final at Lord’s, India managed only 183 runs. Against the fearsome West Indian batting lineup featuring Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, and Clive Lloyd, the total looked hopeless. Then came the moment every Indian cricket fan remembers.Viv Richards mistimed a pull shot. Kapil Dev ran backward nearly 20 yards and completed one of cricket’s most iconic catches. The West Indies collapsed. India bowled them out for 140, winning by 43 runs. Mohinder Amarnath’s brilliant all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
